Focused on Mississippi: Pinola Day
SUMMARY: The town of West, located in Simpson County on Highway 28, is larger than nearby extinct Westville. Westville, the first county seat, is now only remembered by its cemetery. On Panola Day, townsfolk and descendants honored past residents by portraying them beside their headstones. After a fire destroyed the second courthouse, the county seat moved to Mendenhall. Westville briefly regained the title but lost it permanently due to depopulation. Panola Day featured school performances, bluegrass music, worship leaders, and a craft fair. Reflecting on simpler times, some might prefer the conveniences of today over the hardships of the past.
