Rain affecting South Mississippi farmers' peanut planting plans
SUMMARY: Peanut farmers in South Mississippi are hopeful 2024 will be better than 2023 when heat and drought drastically affected crop yields, resulting in farmers harvesting only half their usual production. Now, wet weather and spring rains have replaced drought concerns, delaying the planting season beyond May 25th, with some farmers forced to replant. Dr. Malcolm Broom from the Mississippi Peanut Growers Association emphasizes weather’s critical impact and remains cautiously optimistic for a return to normal conditions. Cotton farmers also faced significant losses in 2023. Currently, approximately 100 families are engaged in peanut farming in Mississippi.
