More than 700 tickets issued in 1st month of Hattiesburg school zone traffic cameras
SUMMARY: The Hattiesburg Police Department's school zone speeding camera pilot program, launched earlier this year, issued 703 citations in four weeks. Cameras were used in two school zones: Woodley Elementary and Grace Christian Elementary. There was a noted decrease in speeding from Week 1 to Week 2 before rates stabilized. Offenders can pay a reduced fine of $230, split among Intellisafe ($130), the city ($75), and the Department of Public Safety ($25). This fine includes a mandatory online safety course and avoids reporting to insurance companies. If successful, the program may expand to more school zones next fall, marking a first for the state.

Shocking Moment: Snake hitched a ride on a Monroe County woman's vehicle
SUMMARY: Good evening, I'm Craig Ford. Emily Leonard has the evening off. Thanks for joining us for WTV 9 News at 6. A woman in Monroe County encountered an unexpected visitor during her morning commute. Jennifer Adams found a large snake hitching a ride on her car on Smithville Road near Hatley. Initially mistaking it for a man on a horse, Adams was horrified to realize it was a snake emerging from under her hood. She believes the snake was trying to reach a bird's nest using her SUV for height leverage. The snake, likely a nonvenomous rat snake, eventually fell off her car. Reporting live, Jake White, WTV 9 News.
