Mississippi authorities, educators learn more about drug, violence prevention
SUMMARY: Eleven agencies from across Mississippi gathered at Northwest Rankin Middle School for an instructor certification training organized by the Law Enforcement Against Drugs and Violence (LEAD). Regional director Nicholas Glenn explained that participants who complete the two-day event would be certified to instruct the K-12 “Too Good for Drugs” and “Too Good for Violence” curriculums. The training focuses on using structured lessons to help young people make better decisions and connect with law enforcement in a non-threatening way. Glenn aims to partner with more agencies, schools, and community stakeholders to spread these programs and help reduce drug use and violence among youth.

Minimal rainfall brings mixed bag
SUMMARY: Rainfall has been slow to return to the Pine Belt, alleviating drought but presenting challenges for local farmers. In Pearl River County, cattle farmer Jeff Easterling mentions increased feeding costs and adjustments to livestock diets due to the drought. He anticipates waiting three weeks before fully grazing cattle. Conversely, soybean farmer John Corley found the drought beneficial for his recent harvest, enabling efficient harvesting and pest control. Experts note that optimal soybean yields need consistent rainfall during late summer and early fall for maturation. Overall, the drought presents mixed outcomes for the local agriculture sector.
