Sumrall outlasts Ripley, 2-0, to claim 7th state baseball championship
SUMMARY: In the state championship rubber match between Summerall and Ripley, USM signee Tai Long struck out 18 in their first encounter and had a no-hitter in the fifth inning. Ole Miss commit Leo Odum then hit a single, advancing Kaden Williamson to third. Despite Tai Long’s efforts, Cody Broom’s successful bunt play led to Drew Davis hitting a deep center fly ball, which was dropped, allowing two runs. Summerall took a 2-0 lead and Landon Hawkins completed a shutout for their seventh state championship. The Bobcats’ perseverance was praised by the coach, reflecting their season motto, “grit.” Players expressed pride and shock at their victory.

Firefighters from north Mississippi sent to help with hurricane relief in Florida
SUMMARY: Mississippi firefighters are on standby in the Florida Panhandle to assist during Hurricane Helen. Members of the Mississippi task force, including firefighters from Oxford, Tupelo, and Water Valley, are waiting in Pensacola for instructions from FEMA on where to deploy. All team members are trained in swiftwater rescue and rope rescue techniques, showcasing some of Mississippi’s best capabilities. Ronnie Taylor, an Oxford firefighter with family in the affected area, shared that his relatives evacuated to Dothan, Alabama, to stay safe from the hurricane’s impact. The team is prepared to provide vital support as needed.
Several firefighters from across north Mississippi are already in Florida to help with Hurricane Helene relief.
SUMMARY: Sheriff Greg Pollen of Calhoun County is frustrated with the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) over persistent flooding issues, particularly on Highway 331, which floods during heavy rains. He vented his concerns on social media, urging MDOT to improve their response to the ongoing problem that has lasted for five years. Chief Deputy Dean Poter highlighted the risks to the road and nearby properties, mentioning inadequate drainage systems and previous assessments without resolution. MDOT acknowledged the issue and stated they are actively seeking a solution.
