Revitalization project coming to Broadway Drive in Hattiesburg
SUMMARY: Hattiesburg officials are seeking resident input on revitalizing Broadway Drive through the “Right Down Broadway” survey. The city aims to rejuvenate the once-bustling area, which now has many vacant buildings. Mayor Toby Barker and other officials see potential in the corridor extending from Highway 49 to downtown, envisioning new businesses and mixed-use developments with residential spaces. The upcoming Hall Avenue overpass is expected to boost daily traffic to 16,000 vehicles, encouraging business growth. A consultant has been hired to help craft the revitalization plan, with community input deemed essential for tailored development. The project timeline is not yet defined.

DPS moving to Pearl
SUMMARY: The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is planning to move from its current building on Woodrow Wilson, which has severe foundation issues, asbestos problems, and gas leaks, to a new site in Pearl. The existing headquarters, built in 1976, needs to be demolished, and the land may be sold for redevelopment. The new DPS site will consolidate all divisions under one roof for the first time, with costs now between $65 and $70 million. The timeline for the new building's completion has shifted to late summer or early fall of 2025. The state is considering commercial development for the vacated site.

Tupelo scraps installation of cell tower in subdivision
SUMMARY: Ford recently reported on the rejection of Verizon's proposal to erect a cell phone tower in the Beldon Pike subdivision. The city's decision, welcomed by local residents and Tom Bigby Electric due to concerns over its proximity to a major electrical transmitter, may not close the case. City Council President NY Davis suggested there might be more legal hurdles ahead. He praised the council for their thorough research and for listening to community concerns. It's uncertain if Verizon will seek alternative methods to push the proposal forward. Updates will be provided as the situation develops.
