MHP ready for historic Memorial Day travel rush

Starting today, the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) will increase visibility to ensure safe travel during the Memorial Day weekend. MHP issued over 900 seat belt violation citations last year, aiming for zero fatalities this year. Their efforts include enforcing laws, patrolling for impaired drivers, speeders, and those texting while driving, alongside assisting stranded motorists. Last year, MHP investigated nearly 200 crashes, recorded three fatalities, and made over 150 DUI arrests.

Free fishing day gives fishermen a chance to learn new skills

SUMMARY: Today was a fun day for fishing enthusiasts as the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks declared it a free fishing day, allowing fishing without a license in public waters. Many fishermen took advantage of this, with Ponto Lake being a popular spot. One attendee mentioned having no luck last week but hoped to catch more fish today. Tomorrow, however, a fishing license will be required, obtainable through the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.

A woman in Monroe County encountered an unexpected visitor during her morning commute. Jennifer Adams found a large snake hitching a ride on her car on Smithville Road near Hatley. Initially mistaking it for a man on a horse, Adams was horrified to realize it was a snake emerging from under her hood. She believes the snake was trying to reach a bird's nest using her SUV for height leverage. The snake, likely a nonvenomous rat snake, eventually fell off her car.
