Students, parents protest firing of Velma Jackson band director
SUMMARY: In Madison County, Mississippi, students and parents protest the firing of Velma Jackson's former band director, Yahya Muhammad, who met with district officials for a hearing. Principal Perry Green cited that Muhammad failed to follow procedures and did not meet employee improvement plan requirements. Despite handling responsibilities for two schools without an assistant, some parents sense tension in the administration, advocating for unity and focus on children's welfare. Dr. Paul Fleming urged collaboration and suggested forming after-school work groups and conducting teacher surveys. The school district emphasized compliance with employment policies but refrained from commenting on specific cases.
