SUMMARY: I spoke with Sheriff Eddie Scott about an investigation and their jail's mental awareness efforts. Sheriff Scott stressed the importance of mental health professionals available to inmates, noting that prisoners in some jurisdictions wait months for evaluations. He implemented a program to eliminate this wait, ensuring inmates timely mental health assessments. These evaluations help determine if an inmate is mentally stable enough for processing and if they require medication or intensive therapy. Community Counseling Services conducts initial evaluations and monitors prisoners throughout their incarceration. It's crucial as 44% of local jail inmates suffer from mental health disorders.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, the Clay County sheriff discussed how it's handled in the jail.
