HPD hosts 'Coffee with a Cop' Thursday

SUMMARY: “Forks and Corks,” an annual restaurant competition and wine-tasting event in Starkville, is fast approaching. The event supports low-cost arts education for children and is organized by the Starkville Area Arts Council (SAAC). Program Coordinator Juliet Reed explains that SAAC, a local nonprofit active for over 25 years, offers free or low-cost arts programming for all ages, including the Cotton District Arts Festival. This year's fundraiser, set for July 27th at the newly renovated State Theater, features a '90s back-to-school theme. With a goal to raise $20,000, proceeds will fund arts education programs like Art Partners and Art in the Park.

SUMMARY: Four people died in highway crashes during the Fourth of July holiday travel period, according to state troopers. None of the fatalities occurred in the local viewing area. Troopers reported 141 crashes leading to 45 injuries and four deaths. The fatal accidents happened in Pearl River County, Scott County, Sunflower County, and Pike County.

Most homicides involve acquaintances, suggesting a need for better conflict resolution strategies. We must focus on youth engagement and parental supervision, as demonstrated by a recent incident involving minors committing capital murder. Community involvement is crucial, with video surveillance from citizens significantly contributing to solving cases. This cooperation is vital in addressing violent crime in Jackson.
