Third annual Cottrell Street festival underway in West Point
SUMMARY: The Cottrell Street Festival in West Point, Mississippi aimed to connect people with the street's vibrant history, which was once a hub for African American businesses in the 60s. The festival organizers wanted to shift the negative perception of the street as drugs and alcohol-infested in the 70s and 80s. They aimed to educate the younger generation about the economic contributions of black businesses in the area. People from outside the state attended the festival, and organizers are already looking for volunteers for next year. The festival was seen as a way to teach school children about their culture and history.
