Understanding “insidious” cogon grass infestations

SUMMARY: Kogan grass is an invasive species that is spreading rapidly throughout South Mississippi, posing a threat to native plant life. Experts warn that the plant’s aggressive growth and dense root systems can choke out desired vegetation in yards and natural areas. The plant can produce up to 3,000 seeds per year, making it difficult to control. Chemical treatments are the most effective way to combat Kogan grass, but it requires patience and persistence. Even burning the plant can make matters worse by spreading its seeds. The Mississippi Forestry Commission offers a grass control program to help manage the spread of Kogan grass.

Flowering season for one invasive species means other native plant life could be at risk.
