Grads take part in Mag Chain ceremony
SUMMARY: Students at Mississippi University for Women took part in the Magnolia Chain Ceremony, a tradition dating back to the late 1800s on the Columbus campus. The ceremony serves as a bridge between student life and becoming an alum of the university, connecting graduates to the “Long Blue Line” of past alumni. Each student received a live magnolia flower, where the leaves symbolize strength and the blossoms represent prosperity, as they move on to the next stage of their lives. The W also held two graduation ceremonies to cap off the event. The tradition of Mag Chain is a meaningful way for graduates to stay connected even as they go their separate ways.

Calhoun City votes to allow sale of alcohol
SUMMARY: Calhoun City, Mississippi, has voted for the first time to permit the sale of alcohol, with a 4-to-1 decision influenced by House Bill 776. Mayor Marshall W. Coleman believes this will enhance local safety by reducing the need to travel for alcohol and could provide economic benefits, keeping tax revenues within the town. The decision reflects a push from citizens and business owners, despite controversy. Coleman has consulted with other towns that have seen growth after allowing alcohol sales. Local businesses are eager to start, aiming for sales by November, following the successful example set by nearby Bruce in 2022.

How Isaac Smith became MSU’s top defender
SUMMARY: Isaac Smith, a safety for Mississippi State, emerged as a football standout at Itawamba Agricultural High School, attracting Division I offers. Coming from an athletic family, with his father playing at Ole Miss, Isaac’s first offer also came from there. However, he felt a strong connection with Mississippi State and its late coach Mike Leach, who he admired for his kindness, including attending a game when Isaac wasn’t playing. Following Leach’s unexpected passing, Isaac sought guidance through prayer and ultimately chose Mississippi State, feeling called to be there. Today, he remains committed, regardless of coaching changes.
