SUMMARY: Mississippi legislators are unlikely to create a new funding formula for public schools this year, as senators blocked a House proposal. The current funding formula, called the Mississippi Adequate Education Program, has only been fully funded twice since its inception in 1997, causing political issues. The House proposed a new formula called INSPIRE, which would provide extra funding to districts with high poverty or special needs populations. However, the Senate rejected this proposal and instead voted to revise MAEP by requiring communities to contribute more to overall school funding. The final decision on school funding will likely be made after the current legislative session ends.
