AP Decision Notes: What to expect in Mississippi’s US House primary runoff
SUMMARY: Ron Eller and Andrew Scott Smith, both Republicans, will face off in a runoff election on April 2 for a chance to challenge the 16-term Democrat Rep. Bennie Thompson in Mississippi’s 2nd Congressional District. Eller, a military veteran and physician assistant, received approximately 47% of votes in the initial primary, while Smith, with a background in commercial real estate and pumpkin farming, garnered about 36%. Each candidate promotes distinct policy platforms: Eller’s E-3 Plan focuses on education, economics, and energy, while Smith’s 10 Rs agenda starts with restoring economic dominance and concludes with dismantling the deep state. They also differ on border security solutions. Turnout for the runoff election is expected to be lower than the primary which saw about 36,000 votes cast. Thompson ran unopposed in the Democratic primary and has held the seat since 1993.
