Supervisors meet to update ordinances after mass shooting in Clay County
SUMMARY: Following a mass shooting at the Oasis nightclub last month, five leaders in Clay County are tightening rules and regulations for nightclub owners. The Sheriff stated that the nightclub violated several ordinances by allowing minors to attend the party where one person was killed and 12 others were injured. The updated ordinance will change permit fees, increase security measures, and better regulate security camera policies at nightclubs. The goal is to protect the public and ensure that businesses are operating in a safe and orderly manner. The shooting remains unsolved, and authorities are taking steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
Clay County supervisors plan to finalize updates to the county’s ordinances this week.

U.S. 84 east in Jones County has seen nearly a dozen accidents in past two weeks
SUMMARY: Jones County law enforcement reports an uptick in vehicle crashes along Highway 84, with Mississippi Highway Patrol responding to 11 incidents in the last two weeks. Many crashes result from driver distractions, like cell phone use and speeding over the 65 mph limit. Fire departments often arrive first at accident scenes, noting that high-impact collisions usually indicate excessive speed as a factor. Recent crashes have led to severe injuries, prompting lane closures and increased pressure on emergency responders, who are currently operating at reduced manpower. Authorities urge drivers to minimize distractions and adhere to speed limits for safety.
