SUMMARY: House Bill 1989, a misdemeanor charges bill, is moving forward in the statehouse to potentially open the first casino in downtown Jackson, Mississippi. If approved, this would be the first casino in the state that is not located on the coast or on the Mississippi River. The bill was presented to the House Ways and Means Committee today by a Republican committee chair from North Mississippi. The proposed casino would be just over a mile from the Capitol building and would need to be owned by someone who already owns a licensed casino. Mississippi’s first casinos opened in 1992, and there are now a total of 26 in the state.
