NASA Ambassador speaks to the community about eclipse safety
SUMMARY: A safety presentation was held at the Columbus-Lowndes Library by NASA’s solar system ambassador, Steven Straily, in preparation for a solar eclipse on April 8th. Free eclipse glasses were provided to ensure safe viewing of the eclipse, which is expected to reach 95 percent totality in the Columbus area. Straily emphasized the importance of following safety measures during the eclipse, such as using proper equipment that meets ISO standards and avoiding viewing the sun with the naked eye to prevent damage to the retina. The eclipse is projected to last nearly three hours, with viewing times varying depending on location.

SUMMARY: Cristian Mitchel Mondragon Gonzales, 29, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder related to a 2018 homicide on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Following a fight at a party on September 23, 2018, Gonzales pursued the victim, convincing him to go for a ride. He then shot the victim multiple times after they exited the vehicle. The victim was found the next morning. Gonzales faces a maximum penalty of life in prison and is scheduled for sentencing on February 12, 2025. The case was investigated by the FBI, Natchez Trace Parkway police, and Ridgeland police.

SUMMARY: Following the tragic death of 18-year-old Greyson Huff in a crash at the intersection of Highway 18 and Sunset Drive in Brandon, Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced safety improvements.
