Columbus city councilman given 30 days to pay fines after third arrest in four months
SUMMARY: Columbus City Councilman, Pierre Beard, has been given 30 days by a judge to pay off fines resulting from a series of arrests. After the third arrest for non-payment of previous fines, he was taken into custody earlier the same day. These charges stem from incidents including a DUI in Alabama on December 1, drug charges ten days later during a warrant execution, and a suspected association with an armed robbery suspect. Although previous misdemeanor domestic violence charges were dismissed, Beard faces potential custody if fines remain unpaid by April 12. Beard has been on the city council since September 2019, with a term ending in 2025.

Would bringing a casino to Jackson open Pandora’s box? Expert thinks so
SUMMARY: Mississippi officials are considering building a casino in Jackson to boost economic development and tourism. In March, House Bill 1989 proposed a program to finance a gaming center downtown, but it failed to pass. A coalition of business leaders, including former Gov. Haley Barbour, has since advocated for a casino in Jackson, citing the city’s population decline and the growing suburbs. However, state law restricts casinos to coastal or river areas, so legislative changes would be needed. Some industry leaders oppose the idea, fearing it could lead to more casinos in other cities and hurt existing establishments.
