Jones County honors fallen deputy on anniversary of death
SUMMARY: Today is the anniversary of Deputy Sheriff Glenn Randall Chancellor’s death in 2001. He was killed in the line of duty at the age of 48 when his patrol cruiser was hit by a drunk driver. The driver was sentenced to prison, house arrest, and probation. Deputy Chancellor was responding to a call when his cruiser was struck head-on by the drunk driver on State Route 537. He was a husband and father, leaving behind a grieving family and friends. The Jones County Sheriff’s Department asks that we remember Deputy Chancellor, his loved ones, and the sacrifice he made while serving his community.

2nd annual 'Safety Festival' held in Hattiesburg Saturday

Walk to bring awareness to mental health issues staged Saturday in Hattiesburg
SUMMARY: The Pine Bell chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) held its Ninth Annual NAMI Walks event today at Town Square Park, aiming to raise awareness and funds for advocacy and education. Dozens of participants walked multiple laps around the park, with over a dozen vendors representing community organizations. The chapter aims to raise $15,000 this year, an increase from last year’s goal of $10,000, and has already collected $11,000. Donations are still being accepted, and more information can be found on their website.

Leaf River provides safety funding
SUMMARY: Leaf River Energy has donated approximately $5,000 to several emergency response agencies in the Pine Belt, including the Jasper County EMA and Stringer Fire Department. EMA Director Hudson Jenkins highlighted that the funds will enhance their preparations for large-scale emergencies. Improvements will be made to their Command Post and include upgrades to radios and computer equipment to streamline operations during extended responses. The utility company annually contributes to local agencies that respond to their facilities, and this year’s donations also extended to departments in Smith County.
