Chaney: Mitigation program would save money, property, and lives
SUMMARY: The Insurance Commissioner of Mississippi addresses concerns about rising insurance rates due to market challenges, like inflation and supply chain issues. A proposed solution is the Hurricane and Wind Mitigation Program, aimed at reducing costs for policyholders by encouraging home fortification. The program includes incentives such as discounts on insurance premiums for homes meeting mitigation standards. Research indicates significant savings from investing in mitigation, with construction improvements potentially leading to up to 60% reduced losses from natural disasters. The program could be funded by an existing property and casualty insurance assessment and grants, without extra bureaucracy. This initiative follows successful examples in nearby states and responds to the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters affecting Mississippi.
