Mississippi tax preparers sentenced for filing false tax returns

SUMMARY: A group of tax return preparers in Mississippi were sentenced to prison for conspiring to file false tax returns for clients in Jackson. Adam Earnest received 100 months, James Klish 50 months, and John Wells 15 months in prison. They were also ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay restitution. Two other conspirators will be sentenced later. Prosecutors convicted Earnest, Klish, and Christopher Rendell of preparing false tax returns at Sunbelt Tax Service. They claimed inflated tax refunds by reporting false information on clients’ returns, resulting in over $3.5 million in tax loss to the IRS. The IRS Criminal Investigation conducted the case.
