Jackson fined $900,000 for 2023 garbage crisis

The rest of the penalty totaling $525,000 will be held in abeyance for two years pending compliance with the agreed order. The failure to collect residential garbage resulted from the city’s inability to agree on a garbage vendor. The city entered into an emergency contract with Richard’s Disposal, which will end on March 31, 2024. Currently, there is pending litigation between the City of Jackson and Richard’s Disposal over a new request for proposals.
