SUMMARY: Mississippi’s natural resources are critical for the wellbeing of future generations and support the state‘s economy through activities such as hunting and fishing. The actions of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks Commission, however, seem to lack transparency and public engagement. Decisions made by its five-member board directly impact wildlife management and conservation policies. A notable concern is the handling of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in deer, highlighted by contentious decisions regarding the CWD zone in Claiborne County. For effective management of such issues, the Commission needs to act with more scientific integrity and accountability. Public awareness and involvement in these matters are vital.
