Lucedale is the City of Love
SUMMARY: Celebrating Valentine’s Day, it’s notable that Lucedale is known as the City of Love, primarily because of its history as a quick wedding destination. In the 1940s, couples from Alabama and Florida flocked to Lucedale, Mississippi, to avoid the three-day waiting period for marriage licenses required in their states. According to “The Best Little Town” by Dayton Whites and Roy Grafe, George County issued over 1,000 marriage licenses annually during World War II, compared to the pre-war average of 200 per year. This trend made George County a haven for those eager to marry quickly. To honor this legacy, the Friends of the Lucedale-George County Public Library are selling brick tiles recognizing couples married for 50-plus years, to be placed on a wall in front of the library. The campaign aims to celebrate enduring love and the role of strong families in building communities.

Sea Oats – The Ultimate Dune Plant
SUMMARY: A ride along Highway 90 in coastal Mississippi offers beautiful views of the Mississippi Sound, now enhanced by Sea Oats—a crucial dune plant adapted to harsh sandy and windy environments. Originally absent from mainland beaches, Sea Oats have stabilized artificially constructed dunes over the past 20 years, preventing sand drift onto roadways. These hardy grasses, with extensive root systems, thrive in sandy soils and tolerate limited saltwater exposure. Their stunning golden seed heads emerge in late summer but are illegal to harvest in many states due to their ecological importance. Sea Oats contribute both beauty and functionality to the region’s landscapes.
