Fallen Mississippi WWII soldier’s remains to return to Hattiesburg for burial

SUMMARY: Marine Corps Sgt. Harold Hammett from Mississippi, killed in action during World War II at Tarawa in 1943, will finally be laid to rest in Hattiesburg next . After enlisting in 1940, Hammett died at age 24, and his remains were unidentified until recent DNA and anthropological analysis confirmed his identity nearly eight decades later. Previously deemed “non-recoverable” in 1949, his remains were disinterred from the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific for examination by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA). A commemorative rosette will mark his name at the Courts of the Missing to indicate he has been accounted for.
