Weather-related death count up to 11 in Mississippi
SUMMARY: Eleven people have died related to the severe winter weather in Mississippi, which brought an arctic cold blast. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency reported deaths from multiple counties, including Panola, Humphreys, Leflore, Rankin, Sharkey, Sunflower, and Washington. The causes ranged from fatal car crashes due to icy conditions to slipping on ice and hypothermia. One of the recent fatalities occurred on Highway 51 in Panola County. Most of the deaths since January 14 have involved vehicle-related incidents. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating these events.

Kemper County woman locked up for recording sexual encounter with minor
SUMMARY: Adreoinna Latoria Hickman, a woman from east Mississippi, has been arrested following a four-year investigation into sex crimes against a child. The Kemper County Sheriff’s Department began investigating her in October 2020 on charges of sexual battery and child pornography. Authorities struggled to find evidence until the FBI located a video of Hickman engaging in illicit acts with a minor and distributing it via social media. After being questioned, Hickman confessed to the crimes, claiming she sought payment but was never compensated. She was placed in jail with a $500,000 bond and is set to appear in court on March 17, 2025.

Memphis community activist sentenced for role in Mississippi bid-rigging scheme
SUMMARY: Memphis community activist Joseph Kyles has been sentenced to four months of house arrest for his role in a bid-rigging scheme involving Cerissa Neal, former executive director of the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE). Kyles, along with Neal and others, was involved in scamming the government by inflating contract prices and creating false purchase orders. Kyles received over $200,000 in state payments but failed to perform the agreed services. Originally facing 12 charges, Kyles pleaded guilty to one count of engaging in illegal monetary transactions and will also serve two years of probation. Neal’s trial is still pending.

Mississippi State gifted $3 million to boost resources for student-athletes
