Federal officials: Hattiesburg poultry plant responsible for teenager’s death
SUMMARY: The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) accuses Mar-Jac Poultry in Hattiesburg of ignoring safety protocols, resulting in the death of 16-year-old Duvan Thomas Perez on July 14, 2023. Perez was fatally injured by a machine while cleaning in an energized state. OSHA found the plant neglected to follow energy control procedures and did not provide necessary lockout/tagout equipment, contributing to this and previous fatalities. Mar-Jac faces proposed penalties of $212,646 for 14 serious and three other-than-serious violations. This marks the facility’s third death since 2020.
