Hattiesburg poultry plant cited after 16-year-old’s death

SUMMARY: A 16-year-old employee was killed at Mar-Jac Poultry in a tragic workplace accident. The U.S. Department of Labor’s OSHA has cited the company for multiple safety violations, including failing to use lockout/tagout procedures to prevent machines from starting during cleaning, lack of guarding on dangerous machinery, and open electrical hazards. This is not the first incident at the facility, as a previous employee was also fatally injured in May 2021. The Department of Labor is also conducting a child labor investigation after the teenager’s death. Mar-Jac Poultry has five business days to comply, request a conference, or contest the findings.
