Warming shelters open across Mississippi as dangerously cold temperatures strike
SUMMARY: In response to a severe cold snap, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency and the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) coordinated with communities to open warming shelters. A list of available shelters across the state, with opening dates mostly around January 14th or 15th, is provided. Residents using the shelters are reminded to bring necessities such as blankets, food, medication, and personal hygiene items, although pets are not allowed. Chaney may sue CMS over creation of state insurance exchange if Gov. Reeves doesnโt sign off
SUMMARY: Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney is reconsidering plans for a Mississippi state health insurance exchange, previously contingent on Governor Tate Reeves’ approval. Chaney estimates that a state-exchange could save $25-30 million annually and provide lower premiums and additional benefits for residents. A bill granting Chaney the authority to create the exchange passed the legislature, but Reeves has not signed it. Chaney believes Reeves may support the exchange after the upcoming elections. If needed, Chaney is prepared to pursue legal action against the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) if it insists on a governor’s letter to proceed.
