Mississippi’s longest-tenured death row inmate trying again to have sentence vacated
SUMMARY: Richard Gerald Jordan, the longest-serving death row inmate in Mississippi, is once again challenging his capital murder sentence. His attorneys are seeking post-conviction relief or the outright vacating of his death sentence, arguing that the maximum penalty at the time of his 1976 crime was life in prison. Jordan was convicted for the kidnapping and murder of Edwina Marter, the wife of a Gulf Coast banker. He demanded a ransom following the crime and later evaded police, ultimately confessing. Jordan has also joined challenges against the state’s execution drug protocol, as judicial decisions on this matter remain pending.
