Mississippi Highway Patrol prepares for 2023 Christmas, NYE travel
SUMMARY: Holiday traffic is heavy on the roads this Friday night, particularly on I-10 at Highway 603 in Hancock County. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is preparing for the holiday travel period in an effort to reduce crashes and fatal wrecks, with over 115 million people projected to travel this season alone. Last year, there were seven fatal wrecks reported in Mississippi during the holidays, and Troop K on the Gulf Coast reported 17 crashes, seven DUIs, and one fatal wreck. Drivers are urged to avoid distractions, buckle up, drive within speed limits, and not drive impaired. Travelers are encouraged to get to their destinations safely and be home for the holidays. MHP’s travel period starts tomorrow morning and ends Christmas Day, with the New Year travel period beginning on December 30th.
Friday was a busy travel day on the highway as people headed out for the long holiday weekend.
