Mother, acquaintance charged in brutal death of one-year-old
SUMMARY: A one-year-old child was beaten to death in Jackson, marking the 108th homicide in the city this year. The child’s mother and an acquaintance are charged with felony child abuse, with expectations of upgraded charges to capital murder. The mother is in police custody, while the whereabouts of the acquaintance are unknown. Four other children at the residence are in the custody of Child Protection Services. The police chief believes the abuse did not start on the day of the incident, noting that the child had bruises and trauma that likely did not occur on the day the child stopped breathing.
