Jackson City Council moving forward with override of mayor's veto
SUMMARY: Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes advocates for Jackson's Police Chief Joseph Wade and his team to work under official contracts, citing crime reduction and operational autonomy. Two weeks ago, the City Council voted in favor, but Mayor vetoed the decision, calling it unnecessary. Stokes insists it's within their rights to override the veto. Councilman Aaron Banks and Brian Grizzell oppose, arguing it's redundant and potentially harmful to employee benefits like health insurance and retirement. Despite the supermajority's support, the debate continues over the necessity and impact of these contracts on city employees' rights and benefits.
Council members are moving forward after overriding the mayor's veto to issue contracts to Jackson's police and fire chiefs.
