Ask John: How does a tsunami form?
SUMMARY: WTV meteorologist John Tusk explains how tsunamis form in a recent “Ask John” segment. He shares that tsunamis are triggered by earthquakes along fault lines, where tectonic plates shift. This movement creates a rift that upwells water, which then travels towards the shore, increasing in height and posing significant danger to coastal populations. Tusk cites past incidents, including the devastating 2004 tsunami and recent events in Japan, emphasizing that tsunamis stem from underwater earthquakes rather than weather phenomena. He encourages viewers to send in questions for further discussion on earth science topics.
Meteorologist John Dolusic answered a question about tsunamis and how they form.
