Jackson rabbi recognized for civil rights efforts
SUMMARY: The story of Rabbi Perry Nussbaum, who survived a bombing by the Ku Klux Klan in the 1960s because of his outspokenness about the unjust treatment of black people, is a symbol of resilience and activism. Rabbi Nussbaum’s office and home were bombed, but no one was seriously injured or killed. This act of violence helped unite people from different faiths to push the civil rights movement forward. Joseph Rosen, the current Rabbi of Beth Israel Congregation, sees the Mississippi Freedom Trail marker outside the synagogue as a reminder of the stand Rabbi Nussbaum took to help push for equality.
