Battle over creating new court centers on equality in Mississippi’s majority-Black capital city
SUMMARY: There is a legal battle over the creation of a state–run court in part of Mississippi’s majority-Black capital city, Jackson. Scheduled to open on January 1, the court would be state-appointed and focus on misdemeanor cases. Those opposing the court claim it suppresses Black people’s political power while those in support say it addresses public safety and justice emergencies. Critics argue that the state is taking away local autonomy, and officials claim it’s a necessary step to fight crime. The Department of Justice says it treats Jackson residents differently from others in the state, and the issue has sparked legal arguments from both sides.
