Effort to bring soccer to Mississippi stalls
SUMMARY: The Hank Aaron Sports Academy has paused plans to introduce a professional soccer team to Mississippi in 2025 due to ongoing legal conflicts regarding the state takeover of Smith-Wills Stadium. Despite efforts since 2019 to partner with the National Independent Soccer Association, further delays have emerged as improvements to the stadium are needed. CEO Tim Bennett emphasized the initiative’s potential benefits for local youth and expressed disappointment over the setback, having invested significantly into the project without requesting funds from the city or state. The National Independent Soccer Association remains hopeful for future collaboration.
