Fire damages abandoned home on Shamrock Drive
SUMMARY: A house was destroyed in an early morning fire, and fire investigators say there is typically an increase in abandoned house fires at this time of year. JFD Fire Chief Patrick Armon emphasized that property owners are still responsible for maintaining and reducing the risk of people entering the home and starting a fire, even if the house is abandoned. He urged property owners to board up and keep a check on abandoned houses to prevent damage and injury. The Shamrock Drive house fire is under investigation, but no one was injured.

Justices hear actual appeal in 'Court on the Road' stop at USM
SUMMARY: Students at Southern Miss had the opportunity to witness real legal proceedings as a three-judge panel from the Mississippi Court of Appeals held oral arguments on a manslaughter case during the university’s “Court on the Road” program. This event was part of the annual pre-law week activities, aimed at enhancing students’ understanding of the legal profession. Participants, mainly from USM’s Legal Services Program, engaged in discussions with judges after the arguments, gaining insights into the appellate process. The court last visited the campus eight years ago, making this a significant educational experience for aspiring lawyers.
