SUMMARY: Efforts are in progress to increase faculty salaries at Gulfport High School, with a specific focus on STEM teachers. STEM students are actively engaged in this initiative, which is addressing a significant community issue along the Gulf Coast. Ja’Colbi Rivers is highlighted for having discussed the matter with a teacher who emphasizes the importance of teaching because it impacts students’ lives positively. The students are gaining practical experience by engaging in real-world projects, such as farming, to apply what they learn in the classroom. Construction technology instructor Dave Huffman and his students have made a tangible difference by creating a mobile classroom for Central American students and a mobile homeless unit funded by a $5,000 grant from Harbor Freights. The unit, which is solar-powered, washable, and equipped with USB ports, was gifted to Back Bay Mission after conversations with a teacher and a volunteer. Dhiana Skrmetti, Development Director for Back Bay, sees this project as a step towards introducing overnight shelters for the homeless in Biloxi and the Gulf Coast. A town hall will be held at the Ground Zero Blues Club in Biloxi to discuss the mobile unit.
