Historic Ocean Springs church celebrates 132 years
SUMMARY: Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Ocean Springs celebrated its 132nd anniversary with a Veterans Day luncheon and special service. The church, a historic symbol in the local black community, is led by Chairman Greg Gibson and was formerly pastored by Jesse Lee Trotter, who became the city’s first black alderman. Concerns arose when an urban renewal map labeled homes as ‘blighted,’ prompting the ‘We Shall not be Moved Coalition’ to organize against potential redevelopment. Despite revisions to the map excluding residential properties, the community remains wary. The revised urban renewal map awaits a vote on November 21st. Mayor Holloway insists there was no intention to displace residents.
