State health department: Smokers 30-40 percent more likely to develop diabetes
SUMMARY: Smokers in Mississippi are 30 to 40 percent more likely to develop type two diabetes compared to non-smokers, according to Amy Winter, Director of the Office of Tobacco Control at the Mississippi State Department of Health. Smoking can also impact how well an individual’s insulin works. Chemicals found in cigarettes cause inflammation in cells, resulting in less response to insulin and requiring diabetics who smoke to take higher doses of insulin. The Mississippi State Department of Health is collaborating with program areas to raise awareness about type two diabetes and offers free programs to support those quitting smoking.

Similarly, in the Court of Appeals District 5 runoff, Amy St. Pe’ and Jennifer Schloegel will compete following a close primary. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and voters must bring photo ID.
