New sickle cell disease treatment cures Mississippian as FDA mulls approval
SUMMARY: Victoria Gray, a resident of Forest, Mississippi, was the first person to undergo an experimental gene therapy treatment for sickle cell disease (SCD) four years ago. The treatment, which aims to permanently modify the DNA in red blood cells affected by SCD, is now being reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). According to a recent report, the majority of patients who received the treatment showed improvement over an 18-month period. SCD affects around 100,000 individuals in the U.S., primarily those of African, Middle Eastern, and Indian descent, and the current permanent cure is through a bone marrow transplant. If approved, the new gene therapy could provide a second solution for those with SCD.

Medical experts indicated that Gregg was aware of her actions. She received two concurrent life sentences for first-degree murder and attempted murder, along with an additional 10 years for tampering with evidence. An appeal is planned.
