SUMMARY: Most of the United States will be falling back an hour this Sunday as daylight saving time comes to an end for 2023. 48 states observe daylight saving time, with Hawaii and Arizona being the only exceptions. The purpose of daylight saving time was to conserve fuel and power during World War II, but there are conflicting studies on whether it actually achieves this goal. Congress has not made any progress in making daylight saving time permanent, so it is likely to continue in the future. The next daylight saving time period will begin on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

What to know before heading to the polls for runoff elections
