Fires continue to spread across Mississippi under several county burn bans

SUMMARY: More than half of the counties in Mississippi are under burn bans due to drought conditions. Fire stations are receiving calls about fires that have grown out of control despite the bans. Violators can be issued citations by the Sheriff’s department. The dry conditions make it easy for fires to start and spread quickly. These burn bans can stretch fire departments, especially since many of them are volunteers. The bans are implemented for safety reasons to protect property and are expected to be lifted at the end of the month in Monroe County, but could be based on conditions.

Man dies at Jackson gas station after being shot
