MDE: Pass rate for Mississippi 3rd graders remains steady
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Education has reported that 85% of 3rd graders passed their reading assessment after final retests for the 2022-2023 school year. This pass rate is similar to previous years, with an initial pass rate of 76.3%, the highest since 2019. The department emphasizes the importance of building literacy skills from pre-K through 3rd grade and will continue to provide professional development opportunities for educators. The Literacy-Based Promotion Act (LBPA) aims to ensure students develop good reading skills and requires 3rd graders to score at a certain level to be promoted to 4th grade. The LBPA also deploys literacy coaches to schools with struggling students and provides professional development in teaching reading.

SUMMARY: Jackson State has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) following allegations of film spying. Accusations surfaced that a player from T.C. Taylor’s team informed Arkansas Pine Bluff that Jackson State had been watching their practice film ahead of their matchup, which the Tigers won 41-3.
