SUMMARY: Waste Management plans to use automated arms on garbage trucks to collect trash in Hinds County, with the intention of making the process safer for drivers and residents. However, some residents are angry and feel left in the dark about the changes. They are concerned that the 96-gallon containers provided by Waste Management will be too heavy for the elderly to handle, and that one container won’t be enough to hold all their trash. Additionally, residents may have to pay $50 for an extra bin. The Board of Supervisors has unanimously requested a solution to these issues.

SUMMARY: Maran County has introduced new thermal imaging cameras to enhance firefighting efforts. These devices, resembling smartphones, utilize infrared technology to detect temperature variations, helping firefighters locate people and objects in low visibility situations. Each fire engine will be equipped with one of these cameras, which aids in identifying hot spots, preventing disorientation, and improving overall safety during operations. Training was recently conducted for 21 firefighters, who successfully used the cameras to extinguish a fire from a dryer lint build-up. The cameras cost around $500 to $600 each, funded by community donations, as the volunteer departments require affordable equipment.
