Hinds County charging cities for inmates at detention center
SUMMARY: Hinds County is introducing a $50 per day fee for cities like Jackson and Clinton to cover the costs of housing detainees at the Raymond Detention Center. This change comes as Hinds County seeks revenue to support its new $150 million detention center and addresses the financial burden placed on the county for years. Currently, 90% of detainees are from Jackson, and the fee could lead to significant costs for the city. Discussions are ongoing about how to cover the fee, with local officials noting that raising taxes may be necessary to meet the expenses. The fee takes effect on October 1st.
