Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway continues to be a vital part the region’s economy
SUMMARY: The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway has been a significant asset for industries in the area for years. It provides a cost-effective route for goods to travel, with one barge holding the equivalent of 70 semi trucks. The federal government invested billions of dollars in building part of the waterway over 50 years ago, and it has paid off economically. For example, Steel Dynamics brings scrap steel in through the port of Mobile and offloads it in Columbus, Mississippi, creating steel and coal products that are sold throughout the southeast. The waterway has also created employment opportunities and attracted businesses to the area.
