More SNAP changes coming Oct. 1

SUMMARY: Starting in October, SNAP benefits will increase, but eligibility requirements will also change. As a result of the Fiscal Responsibility Act signed by President Joe Biden, able-bodied adults without dependents (aged 52-54) will need to prove they are actively working, training, or in school to qualify for SNAP benefits. Previously, this requirement only applied to individuals aged 18-52. There are exemptions to the work requirements, such as homeless individuals, veterans, and youth who aged out of foster care. Those who fail to meet the work requirements will only be eligible for SNAP benefits for three months in a three-year period. Additionally, most SNAP recipients will receive larger benefit amounts in October due to a cost-of-living adjustment.
